We don't have a formal mission statement. Our goals are very simple. We have discovered GNU/Linux and want to talk to others who have made the same discovery. We are experts and novices, professionals and hobbyists, young and old. Whoever you are, we hope we have something for you.

Steve presented on the subject of shell scripting. Bash was the main topic.
Steve gave numerous examples of the power of bash.

Interestingly the whole presentation was written with a bash script, each
slide as a function, complete with navigation functionality, etc. Pretty
neat. The actual presentation is attached.

Question of the day was: If you were to attend a class of Linux for beginners what would you teach
- general desktop use, don't start with cmd line to scare beginners
- hardware compatibility - sound (ALSA) issues
- shell scripting
Most people said they would like to see weekly frequency

Brett Birdsall showed a presentation on encryption. General concepts in asymmetric key encryption were discussed as well as how to generate keys, and how to encrypt/decrypt files.

The official board elections were held as usual every November.

Iassen Hristov gave a presentation about use of Linux in special applications, appliances, embedded systems, low-power applications, etc.
The presentation in OpenOffice 2.0 format (765 KB) is attached to this post.
Among the discussed devices/platforms were WRT, Cobalt Qube, Tivo, VIA Mini-ITX and Gumstix.

Attendees were also able to see the actual Motorola WR850G, MIPS Qube 2 and Media Box Mini-ITX devices.

Steve made a show-and-tell session covering home network wiring. Topics covered:

  • Showed some tools used in the process
  • Showed different connectors, wires and wiring blocks
  • Showed an example panel board - a piece of plywood with mounted network switch, power strip, wiring block, etc.
  • Discussed various standards for cables, color coding, wiring and building codes.

Our June 23 annual picnic for Clug members is at the Denver Seikman Environmental Park. Bring food, drink, and if you like model rockets:).

directions to Park:
1)Take I-275 to the Lawrenceburg Exit--it is just north of the Ohio River on the western leg of I-275
2)after exiting I-275 turn left at the stop light at the end of the exit ramp--you'll be on Rt50 heading West
3)Go west on Rt. 50 ~6 miles and turn left onto Rt.56 at the light (confusing intersection, if you look to your right you'll see a sign indicating Rt. 350; turn left and you'll be on Rt. 56)
4)Follow the signs to stay on Rt 56 going though Aurora--as you exit Aurora you'll see the Ohio River on your left--stay on Rt 56 for ~9 miles to Rising sun
5)Follow the signs to stay on Rt. 56 through Rising Sun--the Rising Sun Library will be on your left at a stop sign--turn left ; go one block to the next stop sign and turn right--you'll be on Rt. 56 leaving Rising Sun
6)Go about 3 miles out of Rising Sun; there will be a sign indicating that Rt. 56 goes to the right--the road you are on continues straight but changes its name to Rt. 156--
7)Turn Right onto Rt. 56 (to stay on Rt 56) --about 50 yards from the turn follow the sign to the Denver Siekman Environmental Park parking lot.--You're there--
